ISLAMABAD – Federal Minister for Energy, Awais Ahmad Leghari has officially announced a major relief for the people of Pakistan. Load management measures have been completely ended. This long awaited change follows the successful arrival of new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) shipments, which have finally stabilized the country’s energy sector.
During a media briefing, the Minister explained that the recent power shortages were caused by a temporary gap in gas supplies. This shortage had forced the government to cut power to various sectors.
However, with the arrival of the latest LNG cargo, power plants have returned to full operation. The Minister confirmed that the energy grid is now stable enough to provide a continuous supply of electricity to consumers across the country.
How Hydropower Changed the Situation
A massive increase in hydropower production has played a key role in ending the electricity crisis. According to Minister Leghari, hydropower production was struggling at just 1,000 MW only two weeks ago. Today, that number has reached a massive 6,000 MW. This jump in production has provided a much-needed boost of cheaper electricity to the national grid.
To keep the system running smoothly, the government has also activated alternative power plants that run on furnace oil and other fuels. While a delay in a shipment from Qatar previously forced the government to buy more expensive gas, the Minister assured the public that the supply chain is now secure. Work is also being done to improve the transmission system so that technical faults do not cause future blackouts.
Pakistan’s Power Capacity Explained
It is important to note that Pakistan has a total capacity to produce about 32,000 MW of electricity. However, the actual amount produced changes based on weather conditions and how much fuel or water is available. Currently, the release of water from dams is being carefully managed by the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) to make sure there is enough water for both farmers and power plants.
The government’s latest updates on the energy sector are summarized in the dashboard below:
Minister Leghari concluded by promising that the government is working hard to keep electricity prices low for the public. The focus is now on making sure that power is not only available but also affordable for everyone in Pakistan.
