Skardu to Bashu Valley – Rough but Scenic Jeep Trip

Skardu to Bashu Valley - Rough but Scenic Jeep Trip

Skardu has no shortage of famous stops — Shangrila, Upper Kachura, Deosai. Bashu Valley is the quieter one nearby, kept that way mostly by its road. Cars can’t finish the journey. Only a 4×4 jeep can.

The valley sits in Gilgit-Baltistan at around 3,600 meters, roughly 40 km from Skardu city. Coming from the Jaglot side, after crossing Astore, add another 50–55 km to reach the same jeep point.

Getting There

From Skardu city, the drive to the jeep point takes about 50 to 55 minutes on a normal road. That’s where the trip changes character. Private cars stop here, and everyone switches to a 4×4 jeep for the rest of the way.

The jeep leg into the valley takes roughly an hour and a half — sometimes closer to two hours, depending on how much oncoming traffic you meet on the narrow sections and how many stops you make along the way.

The Bashu Bridge and the Jeep Track

The road crosses a narrow bridge — locally known as the Bashu Bridge — that only fits one vehicle at a time. Past the bridge, the real jeep track begins: rocky, narrow, and slow going, with a mountain wall on one side and a drop toward the valley on the other.

In places, the track is too tight for two jeeps to pass, so one driver pulls into a wider spot and waves the other through. It’s a rough ride — expect bumps, big stones, and a driver who knows exactly where to slow down.

What You’ll See

Bashu Valley opens up green and forested, with small glacial streams cutting through pine woodland and mountains framing every angle. Depending on when you visit, the peaks around the valley carry patches of snow well into the warmer months, while the valley floor turns green with summer grass. Visit in October and you’ll likely catch both — grass just starting to turn and snow still sitting on the ridgelines.

The name Bashu comes from Balti, tied to the word for raisins or sweet grapes — a nod to the wild fruit and berry plants that grow across the area, including deodar, chilgoza pine, juniper, wild rose, and a range of alpine herbs and flowers. The wider area is also home to markhor, ibex, wild leopard and deer, according to regional wildlife records — though sightings are rare and not something to expect on a day trip.

Staying the Night

Bashu works as a day trip, but staying overnight gives the valley room to breathe. Camping is the main option — basic tents run around PKR 2,000 to 2,500, and huts cost roughly PKR 4,000 to 5,000. These prices shift with the season and demand, so treat them as a starting point rather than a fixed rate.

Food is the one weak spot. What’s available in the valley tends to run expensive for what you get, so most visitors bring their own supplies, especially if traveling as a family or group.

What the Jeep Costs

The union-fixed jeep rate for a same-day return trip is PKR 12,000. Staying overnight bumps that to PKR 15,000. That price is for the jeep, not per person, so a group traveling together splits the cost far more comfortably than a solo traveler would. Confirm the rate at the jeep point before you set off — local rates do get adjusted over time.

Hiking Through the Pine Forest

The pine forest along the valley floor is easy, shaded walking. For more, the slopes around Bashu offer hiking with wider views the higher you go — just move carefully, since the terrain turns uneven fast and mountain weather can shift with little warning.

The Glacier Behind It All

Bashu Glacier feeds the valley through the summer, sending meltwater down through small waterfalls and streams that keep the valley green. Afternoons can turn cloudy fast, and rain on an unpaved jeep track is worth avoiding — plan your return before the weather turns.

Is It Worth the Rough Road?

Bashu Valley isn’t for anyone chasing smooth roads and easy access. The track is long, bumpy, and occasionally uncomfortable. That’s also exactly why it’s stayed quiet. For travelers already in Skardu who want pine forest, glacial streams, and space without a crowd, it earns its place on the itinerary.
