Heatwave drives early summer vacations push

The Punjab government is considering starting summer vacations for schools before the standard June 1 date. Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat confirmed that no final decision has been made, with discussions ongoing on three to four separate proposals.

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a weather advisory for May, June, and July, warning that temperatures across most districts are expected to remain above normal. This advisory has accelerated the push for an early school closure.

Summer Vacations Dates Under Talks

Eid ul Adha holidays are expected from May 27 to May 29. Since May 30 and May 31 fall on a weekend, education authorities are now considering aligning the summer vacation start with the Eid break.

Under the normal academic calendar, summer holidays begin from June 1. The overlap of Eid holidays and weekend days makes a May 27 start a practical choice for the administration. But May 23 is also under consideration due to severe heat conditions across the province.

Shorter vacations proposed for future years

Education Minister Hayat has proposed reducing both summer and winter vacations in future academic years to recover learning time. The proposal includes raising the total number of school days from 180 to 190 annually.

The minister also revealed that the government is considering reducing summer vacations by 15 to 20 days this year to compensate for academic losses already incurred in the current calendar.

Summer camps on the table

Private schools have requested permission to run optional summer camps with sessions from 7 AM to 10 AM during the break to continue limited academic engagement.

Teacher training is also scheduled during the summer break, with the School Education Department planning a mandatory professional development programme run by QAED across districts.

Final decision will be announced after the education ministry reviews weather conditions and consults the moon sighting committee for the Eid holiday confirmation.
